This article link highlights the plight of coral reefs globally. Since this article was written, some 30% of reproductive corals have been listed by the IUCN as being in some endangered category. The economic linkage between healthy reef biodiversity and human well-being is well established. The 'free' service provided by coral reefs must be protected if we are serious about helping the poor - they will be the first to feel the effects of coral reef losses.
Maybe a strong message to global commerce about the economic benefits of investing in maintaining reef health and biodiversity would help. General awareness and political will do not seem to be sufficient
