Stan Ovshinsky’s hydrogen economy converts free (from the sun) energy into the satisfaction of human needs in a completely non-polluting manner. Thus, the severe pollution levels that trigger the catastrophe in Donella Meadows’ mathematical model of our future never occur. Our society transitions nicely from burning ever-scarcer hydrocarbons to the pollution-free harvesting of hydrogen. Remember, anything that burns can be replaced by hydrogen NOW. Middle East oil-related entanglements do not occur; Americans prosper by producing the infrastructure and products required for the hydrogen economy; Detroit could produce hybrid hydrogen autos, not only waiting for the fuel cell to become accepted but also utilizing the basis of the present automobile industry, the internal combustion engine. Dayton might focus upon manufacturing nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Akron could develop hydrogen storage industries and so forth. This is clearly a half-full glass, when contrasted with the dark vision where we remain addicted for too long to a rapidly-declining, polluting hydrocarbon economy.
Stan saw these problems emerging forty-five years ago. One can only begin to appreciate the mountain of frustration endured by someone who has fought against the forces that have resisted the hydrogen economy for half a century. He. Iris, Bob Stemper and ECD took on the long, onerous task of developing the products and systems required to bring about the hydrogen economy. Stan Ovshinsky deserves enormous credit for making ECD an international company and shepherding it through the dangerous shoals where so many businesses have foundered."
